MR signal intensity of the optic radiation.

PURPOSE To determine whether a hyperintense layer adjacent to the lateral ventricle on T2-weighted MR images represents the optic radiation. METHODS We reviewed 11 brain specimens from patients with nonneurologic diseases and MR images from 43 healthy volunteers. The MR images in a patient with cerebral infarction involving the lateral geniculate body were also reviewed to evaluate wallerian ...

Foci of increased T2 signal intensity on brain MR scans of healthy elderly subjects.

Foci of increased T2 signal intensity were found on brain MR scans in 16 (59%) of 27 healthy elderly volunteer subjects, ages 63 to 86 years old. These foci were not related to cognitive function or cerebrovascular risk factors; instead, they were highly correlated to age, being present in 11 of 11 subjects aged 75 years and over.

Intracranial lesions with high signal intensity on T1-weighted MR images – review of pathologies

In the article we present pathological intracranial substances and lesions, which produce high signal intensity on T1-weighted MR images. Six groups of substances are discussed: 1. Gadolinium - based contrast agents, 2.hemoglobin degradation products (intra- and extra-cellular methemoglobin), 3. lipid-containing lesions (lipoma, dermoid cyst, implanted fatty materials, laminar cortical necrosis...
